SHREVEPORT, Louisiana – The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) recently unveiled the school performance scores for the 2022-23 academic year on Monday, November 13. These scores, akin to a report card, offer valuable insights into school growth and student preparedness for the next academic level. According to LDOE, the statewide score has shown a commendable increase, reaching 78.5, surpassing the pre-pandemic score of 77.1.

Mitch Downey, the Superintendent of Bossier Parish, expressed pride in his district, commending students for their achievements and acknowledging the dedication of teachers. Caddo Superintendent Dr. T. Lamar Goree attributed the substantial growth in student performance to the collective efforts of students, teachers, school leaders, and staff over the past three years.

DeSoto School Board President Coday Johnson celebrated the district’s “A” rating, emphasizing the commitment to excellence and a strong culture within the district. Ten school systems, including Zachary, West Feliciana, and Ascension, received the highest ratings.

Statewide Overview: Progress Amid Challenges

Louisiana Department of Education Superintendent Cade Brumley released the statewide scores, highlighting a 1.4-point improvement to 78.5, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. In a virtual briefing, Brumley acknowledged the positive strides made but stressed the need for continued efforts.

Brumley emphasized the importance of understanding individual student needs, having high-quality teachers, providing educational choices for families, and focusing on literacy and foundational math. He noted that the highest-scoring school systems included Zachary, West Feliciana, Ascension, DeSoto, Cameron, Lincoln, Central, Plaquemines, Vermillion, and Vernon.

The most improved school systems were recognized as East Carroll, Concordia, St. James, St. John the Baptist, Natchitoches, Evangeline, St. Martin, Acadia, Pointe Coupee, and Lincoln.

Brumley credited the progress in literacy to efforts focused on the science of reading and advocated for a similar approach to mathematics teaching. Despite acknowledging the impact of the pandemic and hurricanes on student learning, he expressed confidence in the ongoing efforts to address learning loss.
